The Enterprise named front page of the day (01/12/12)

The Enterprise ran a nice ASF on a local woman who will go on to represent the state of Massachusetts in the Miss America pageant.

The Five things to know about Molly Whalen package uses a cutout of the local beauty, with the content set against a tan background.

Nice touch to let the image overlap two edges. Doing so give the image just a little bit of depth.

Once thing I'd recommend, though, is using a more defined grid for the centerpiece. There are two distinct columns, which are defined by numbers 4 and 5. But if you were to follow the cutter the two elements create, you can see some text above overlapping into the right side.

Grids also help align items horizontally as well. Keeping numbers 4 and 5 on the same horizontal plane would give the package a cleaner appearance.

I took the liberty to modify the centerpiece in Photoshop to show the differences. The image below shows some minor adjustments.

You can see in the image above the gutter is now more central to the package and the headline for 4 and 5 are in alignment. the headline for No. 3 was put on one line for consistency.

Below are closeups of the the centerpieces before, on the left, and after, at right.

You'll also notice that her name was moved to the left to further define the columns of information.

Below is the same image with guides more clearly showing the columns.

When a package has a number of elements, such as this, first define a grid for the package that can hold all the elements. Doing so will make for a much cleaner presentation.

Nice page.
