Journal Star named front page of the weekend (June 4-6)

The Journal Star took to the sky — the skybox, that is — to trump up some stories of local interest in its Sunday edition.

Adding a big, deep photo to the usually more shallow skybox position is an instant attention-grabber. The photo in that position breaks the front-page mold, not that that's a big deal for the Star's ever-changing front page. But it certainly has a great deal of surprise factor when readers don't see this treatment very often.

The Register-Mail up the road in Galesburg — much closer geographically to the team's homtown of Monmouth, Ill. — also used this approach in shouting the result. The larger photo, arguably, is better since it more clearly shows what's going on — team, jerseys, leather gloves, emotion.

It's the rest of the Journal Star page, though, that helped elevate it to the top today.

The organization of the news hole, presenting the stories vertically, help give a nice contrast to the horizontal skybox photo. The photo sizes are in check and don't compete with the main image above.. The placement of the photos around the page also help keep readers moving about nicely.

The bold frame around the centerpiece highlights that package nicely.

Well done, Peoria!
