The Daily Republican in Marion, Ill., went with an alternative story format for the "5 tips for braving the cold" package. Nestled near the southern tip of Illinois, the winter weather has been fairly mild in Marion, which means this is the right time for a story such as this.
The cyan headlines give the package an icy feel. The photos show people and pets dressed in warmer clothes.
And those five tip? Can't forget those. The numbers are given the same color as the headlines.
The cutout is nice. But remember it's always better to anchor a cutout to the rule lines that frame the package instead of another floating element within the package. If you look closely, the legs of the girl on the right are anchored to a shadow. Hmm.
I like the frame effect given to the photos. Newer versions of QuarkXPress and InDesign make it easy to create that effect. Older version, however, may not have a drop shadow function. If not, as it seems here, I'd suggest creating that effect in Photoshop for a cleaner look.
Still, this is a nice page.
