Vertical centerpieces complement the shape of a broadsheet page like no other. Packages look even better, with a great deal more impact, when they reach nearly the full depth of the page.
Thats just what you see on the front of The Independent today.
The story about the relocation of a local chocolate shop, written by Doug Staley, includes some delicious visuals. Who doesn't like chocolate ... warm, melted chocolate ... and strawberries. Ok, maybe I'm a little hungry as I type this, but that looks delish.
That yummy-looking photo, snapped by staffer Kevin Whitlock, give the page a lot of color when used as the background to the package. The image was edited in Photoshop to extend the chocolatey goodness to fill the depth of the package — and that's ok to do.
The headline? Perfect for this story. Love it.
A second Whitlock photo shows the owner in her shop.
Do you see anything missing? I do ... vertical rules that would normally be used to separate unrelated content. The designer did the right thing here and kept them off the page because they're just not needed when a colorful background is used to define a package like this.
Really nice page!
