Interesting horizontal and vertical visuals on The Repository cover attract attention to Friday's front page.
The centerpiece story by staff writer Edd Pritchard takes a look at the avalanche of people interested in jobs in Ohio's relatively new oil industry. More than 1,200 hopefuls lined up for a oil industry job fair at Kent State University's Stark County campus in Jackson Township.
The overhead shot of interviewees, photographed by staffer Michael Balash, emphasizes the number of people who came out to the job fair, as does the secondary photo, also by Balash.
The larger photo was cut out on one side, faded at the top and anchored on three sides. The orientation of the photo created a nice vertical space for the headline and introductory paragraph. The display type's ragged-right edge worked nicely next to the cut-out edge of the photo. See that crisp edge on the left of the display type? The text is nicely aligned on down the left side.
Up top, just below the nameplate, is a strong horizontal skybox promo to the Cleveland Indians' record-setting, 16-inning opening day game. (By the way, they lost.) The promo pushes readers to the story in the sports section, as well as to the photo gallery.
