Sunday's Observer-Dispatch front educated its readers, updating them on the status of several projects started by Utica Mayor David Roefaro, who announced recently that he won't seek a second term.
The centerpiece includes a great deal of informatin that's packaged beautifully in the tight confines of the vertical package. First of all, the editors made a wise choice by reducing the number of stories on the front to make room for the story. The package occupies four columns of the news hole.
A file photo of the mayor is used as the dominant visual entry point on which the main and secondary headlines are placed. The mayor's elbows peak out of the photo frame, pointing to the extensive breakout below.
The breakout includes updates for five major projects started by the mayor. Each project includes a 1-sentence description, followed by an earlier quote from the mayor touting the project. The meat of each item falls under the next two bullet points: What's happening now and the hurdles each project faces. Lots of information for readers!
Each project breakout includes a detail image, whether an artist's rendering or file photo, cropped into a tight vertical.
Very well done!
