Suburban Life Publications is seeking a sports reporter who can help us accelerate our digital growth.
We operate 68 community and niche websites — including 5 sports microsites — as well as 21 weekly newspapers and in the western Chicago suburbs. We strongly prefer candidates already in the greater Chicago area.
This person must be not only proficient but also thoughtful in developing and managing content across our online, mobile and print publication platforms. This person also must understand the unique strengths and user expectations of digital publications.
The primary responsibility of this position is producing a niche website focused on high school sports in your assigned beat.
The specific duties include:
• Generating daily updates and stories to keep the microsite fresh
• Providing frequent opportunities for reader involvement and interaction
• Using social media to engage our audience and promote our site
• Telling stories through the use of nonlinear items such as links, videos, maps, polls
• Recruiting locals to blog about prep sports
• Performing basic site administration
Although the first and overwhelming priority is the microsite, some of this reporter’s work will also appear in print. We aim for our website to chronicle the daily goings-on, with our newspaper focused on adding context and analysis.
Applicants should have a demonstrated ability to:
• Engage audiences through social media and other means of digital interactivity.
• Develop innovative content solutions and presentations.
• Employ alternative, multimedia and nonlinear storytelling.
• Communicate proactively with colleagues in other newsroom departments.
• Place a high emphasis on both external and internal customer service.
APPLICATION GUIDELINES
• We strongly prefer candidates from the greater Chicago region. We encourage recent grads to apply.
• E-mail applications only. No phone calls.
• Send a resume, no more than five work samples, and a short letter of introduction. Include examples of digital storytelling.
• Only applicants selected for interviews will be contacted.
