Do you have dazzling design skills and an excellent eye for copy editing? If so, we need you. Join our Design House, which will be setting up shop in Rockford, Ill., as GateHouse Media moves to centralize page design and copy editing for all of its newspapers.
You will work with local editors from across the country to design attractive and compelling news and features pages in a busy, energetic team setting. You’ll also write engaging headlines, ensure copy is error-free and post content to the web.
The Design House in Rockford will be responsible for daily newspapers circulation 5,000 and above, plus some weeklies. Rockford is Illinois' third-largest city, with award-winning attractions and year-round recreational opportunities. It is an affordable place to live and centrally located -- just a quick drive from Chicago, Milwaukee and Madison.
There are a variety of shifts available for qualified candidates.
The copy editor/page designer’s duties include:
* Providing a final read of all copy submitted for a variety of publications.
* Using page design software and a centralized front-end system, laying out a steady stream of news pages from beginning to end.
* Publishing final news stories to appropriate news websites, following GateHouse content strategy.
* Editing and producing special sections.
* Working with editors across the country to continually improve our newspapers.
The copy editor/page designer must:
* Be a true multi-tasker, able to handle curveballs on hard deadlines.
* Be a team player, able to interact with and juggle tasks with dozens of colleagues.
* Have proven line copy-editing skills and be versed in AP style.
* Have experience with page layout software, preferably Adobe InDesign.
* Have experience with web publishing.
* Have a few years' experience with copy editing and page layout.
