People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is opposing a measure that would make Wizard of Oz pup Toto the state dog of Kansas, saying such a move would  "worsen one of Kansas’ serious problems: its reputation as a hotbed for cruel, filthy puppy mills."

From the Wichita Eagle: " 'Naming the cairn terrier – or any breed – Kansas’ state dog would drive up demand for these dogs and entice puppy mills to churn out litter after litter of the breed, meaning fewer dogs would be adopted from your state’s animal shelters,' wrote Martin Mersereau, director of the cruelty investigation department for PETA."

And from the New York Daily News: "Rep. Ed Trimmer is proposing a bill to designate the Cairn terrier the official breed of Kansas, the Wichita Eagle reported. ... 'It is one of those things that when a constituent asks you, you do," he said, adding to the Kansas City Star he hopes it won't take much time away from 'very, critical, critical, issues' the legislature had on its plate."

Some ideas:

  • Only 11 states in the U.S have a stat dog. Does yours? If not, what should it be? Here's the list.
  • Ask local shelter operators what they think about the Kansas proposal. Do they agree with PETA's position?
  • Be sure to publish an online poll, asking readers what they thing.
