AP style on Facebook Timeline

AP ruled not too long ago that Facebook’s new Timeline feature should be capitalized, even though Facebook sometimes doesn’t cap the word. (Be wary in general of basing your capitalization on a company’s usage – in this case, Facebook sometimes caps the word, and sometimes it doesn’t.) Timeline is also one word, just like Facebook, though I still see FaceBook references.

AP is on a roll with its style guides, most recently releasing a World Economic Forum Style Guide. It’s a handy guide to business terms and more. Check it out by following the link above.

Most diseases are not capitalized, but the “type” in diabetes is. For example, you would write, "John has Type 1 diabetes."

Kate Middleton is still known as Kate Middleton, AP says. You also may refer to her as the duchess of Cambridge.

AP doesn’t use an accent mark in words such as exposé and résumé, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use them. The rule is only in place because the accent mark gets lost or gets turned into nonsense symbols in translation. So feel free to use them if you’d like.
