Style tips on June events

Here’s a quick roundup of things taking place this month:

  • Flag Day is June 14. There shouldn’t be any confusion about the style of Flag Day, just make sure to cap it.
  • Father’s Day is June 17. Make sure your possessive is in the correct place.
  • The summer solstice – when we change seasons – is just so. Don’t capitalize either word.
  • Although it may feel like summer, it doesn’t officially begin until June 20. Also remember: Seasons don’t get capitalized.
  • The U.S. Open Golf Championship takes place June 14-17. There are several events each year in the U.S. that are called "U.S. Open," so make sure it’s clear you’re writing about golf.
  • The biggest worldwide tournament outside of the soccer World Cup takes place this month: The European Championship. The tournament is also called the Euro, not to be confused with the currency.
