It’s time for Timeline.

As of March 30, you can say “goodbye” to the look of your old pages, and “hello” to Timeline, which is now mandatory for businesses on Facebook.

Although your posting strategy on Facebook might remain the same throughout the transition, the look and feel of your page will most certainly change. Timeline gives you the opportunity to display a big, beautiful cover photograph at the top of your page to represent your newspaper and your community.

As we mentioned in a post and webinar we held last week (you can find specific details and how-to instructions about Timeline here),  the stronger the association with your newspaper and your town, the more effective this image will be.

You can display an image of a local building …

The Cape Codder's Facebook timeline.

Pull a photo from your archive …

Rockford Register Star's Facebook timeline

Grab an aerial shot of your town …

GHNewsroom.com
The Patriot Ledger's Facebook timeline.

Or post an image of your first front page  …

The Register's Facebook timeline.

Whatever look you decide on, know that the cover image doesn’t have to be a permanent addition to your page. You can change the image with the seasons, let your readers vote on the cover photo, or update it monthly (or weekly) to keep your fans coming back to see what you’re up to. Just make sure the image is hi-res, so it doesn't appear pixelated.

Your profile image is the box underneath the cover photo, and is the image your fans are most likely to see around the site. Follow the lead of The State Journal-Register, and keep your profile image simple.

We’ve also created a gallery of some of GateHouse media organizations that are already on Facebook Timeline. Would you like to add yours to this gallery? Send it to araih@corp.gatehousemedia.com.
