I found a really helpful article by Tom Schmitz on www.portent.com.
He is an SEO and social media marketing professional, and the article is one of the few recent ones I've seen that are directed towards SEO for newspaper and magazine companies.
The article is a good read if you still can't grasp your mind around the whole, "Why is Twitter important for newspapers?" thing. Who's really reading my tweets, anyway? Who really cares? Is this really going to increase my page views?
According to Schmitz, the answer is yes. He offers helpful graphics that demonstrate the potential viral effect Twitter can have on one's product.
First, you need followers - a lot of them. But you also need a niche of followers. Here's how the chain goes, according to Schmitz:
You on Twitter --- Your close circle --- A niche of people --- The industry --- Viral!
But it's not as easy as it sounds. After you gather your followers, you need the right tweet and a link. The content is what sells. You need to have something truly worth going viral. Whatever it is, it has to do it well: comical, violent, talented, artistic, moving, etc.
All in all, keep tweeting. People are out there; they are reading your stuff; it does make a difference! Make sure you are using the right hashtags, dropping the right keywords, and be sure you are including a shortened link.
