Happy New Year!
Now that it's 2012, it is a good time to go back through your 2011 analytics to see what did well and what didn't.
Try to link together the trends of successful stories, videos or blog posts. Similarly, take note of the commonalities of the unsuccessful material. Look for keywords, media, phrases, pronouns, etc.
For example, I saw a similarity between two daily short stories that did well:
"Today in the news: Quadrantid meteor shower should be dazzling"
"What to watch: Quadrantid meteor shower"
Both online stories saw good pageviews. This story also saw big pageviews in October:
"What to watch: Northern lights on video"
The theme here is space-related phenomena, or possibly anything nature-related. For example, this story from November also saw good numbers:
"What to watch: Humpback whale nearly swallows surfer"
Line up your "best-selling" stories and find the thread connecting them.
