Several GateHouse Media news organizations posted online polls with different angles on Sept. 11. Check out their approaches to reader engagement.
WHAT THEY DID:
The Repository in Canton, Ohio, asked readers if Sept. 11 should be a national Patriots Day holiday, and I saw a simliar question on several websites.
The State Journal-Register in Springfield, Ill., asked readers how they would mark 9/11.
And The Observer-Dispatch in Utica, N.Y., asked if readers think Americans are as patriotic now as they were 10 years ago after 9/11.
TAKEAWAYS: Remember to keep your poll questions timely, and choose topics that really have a variety of possible answers . Avoid "yes" or "no" answers. Keep questions short and easily digestible. And if you're short of ideas, check out GHnewsroom's poll ideas. A new poll idea is posted every Thursday. Also, be sure to keep local issues in mind.
Promote your polls in your newspaper, and be sure to let people know how your community voted on the previous poll.
