Playing up a strong photo is an effective way to create an attractive front page.
The State Journal Register did that today, earning them a nod for page of the day.
This touching slice of life moment, captured by staffer Justin Fowler, was given space to breathe and was supported with a detail shot, pull quote, informative cut, and fitting headline. Leading off the centerpiece with a location was a nice touch.

I am a sucker for good photography and appreciate the strategic use of images to draw attention to, and enhance, a front page story. In my book, always a winner.
