The Patriot Ledger named front page of the day (02/21/12)

The Patriot Ledger today produced an ASF centerpiece on T — the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority — which offers bus, commuter rail, subway and ferry service for Boston's bay area residents. T officials are preparing for a financial shortfall in the coming fiscal year in the amount of $161 million.

The Ledger dissects what could have been a traditional long-form story and presents the information in four parts: The issue, Money woes, Options and What's next.

What I believe are file photos (no credits on any!) are cropped to extreme horizontals. Though the frames are tight, the imagery is still quite recognizable and gives the package a strong visual presence.

And this package is different. Different is good because breaking the mold can surprise readers in a positive way. Makes them take notice and likely spend more time poring over the content — which is exactly what good design is supposed to do.

Nice page.
