The Utica Observer-Dispatch in New York has had some lovely fall foliage photos from a callout for readers to send their photos.
WHAT THEY DID: Utica has the callout in Local Loop, which is GateHouse's user-generated content platform, plus they put the callout in their hotlinks area just under the top navigation on their website. Check out the reader fall foliage photo gallery. You'll find dozens of photos, and not all of them are foliage. You'll see pumpkins and livestock, along with photos of leaves on water, or leaves reflected in water, or leaves framing trains and houses.
TAKEAWAY: Be sure to promote your callouts to readers prominently on your websites. The hotlinks area is right at the top. We also look for callouts, especially photo-driven ones, in our carousels because of the opportunity to grab people's attention with a photo. You can change out the photo to include a new reader submission to keep the callout fresh. The GateHouse News Service has a ready-made fall foliage callout to get you started.
