Story idea: Dealing with the heat

There are plenty of ways to keep cool on hot days.

It is shaping up to be a hot week in much of the country. The Northeast will get its hottest days of the year so far starting on Wednesday. Other parts of the country, including the Midwest, have also been sizzling this week.

The spreading heat is all the result of a dome of high-pressure aloft that will expand and shift from out of the central states into the Northeast by mid to late week.  In simple terms, high pressure in the upper levels of the atmosphere means hot temperatures at the surface.

To localize:

  • Check if your city has any cool centers and list them in the paper and on your Web site. Remind people to check on senior citizens who live alone and to make sure kids aren't out in the heat for too long.
  • Talk with local doctors and health professionals about how extreme heat can affect people when they work or try to do too much outside. List the symptoms of heat exhaustion and how to treat it.
  • Local vets will be able to give you tips on how to keep animals cool and healthy during the hot days.
