1. Gas prices may be lower this Memorial Day weekend -- so does this mean everyone's going to hop in their cars and get out of town? If so, where are they going, and are local or state police gearing up wtih seat-belt or DUI checkpoints? Will road construction be halted for the weekend? If people are staying home, why? What will they do? Have local grill, patio furniture and pool retailers seen better sales than in recent years? Could mean people are making their homes their getaways.
2. What can people do in your area to celebrate the true meaning of the holiday? Do you have lists of fallen soldiers from your area in our nation's wars? How do family members of the fallen observe Memorial Day?
3. Many municipal pools open around Memorial Day, so it's a good time to highlight the importance of teaching kids how to swim. Who offers lessons locally, and what are the fees? For homeowners considering a pool, make sure they how about local fence ordinances and other safety precautions they must take. According to the CDC, "every day, about 10 people die from unintentional drowning. Of these, two are children aged 14 or younger. Drowning is the sixth leading cause of unintentional injury death for people of all ages, and the second leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 14 years."
