Autumn – aka fall – begins Sept. 22. Make sure you don’t capitalize "autumn" or "fall" (unless it starts a sentence, of course). We’ve previously written on Editing Words about seasons and related words, so check out those pointers as well. Here are some other tips:

- Fall begins on the "autumnal equinox." Neither word here gets capitalized either.

- It will soon be time for corn mazes and the like. Watch your capitalization here, too, and don't mistake "maize" for "maze."

- More words not to capitalize: "harvest moon." The theme here is that most words associated with fall do not get capitalized.

 

- Halloween decorations are already in stores, and you'll soon be writing about the holiday. If you have any questions on Halloween style, please leave a comment below.
