AP style on Kentucky Derby, NBA finals

The Kentucky Derby is Saturday. It's the first leg of horse racing’s Triple Crown. Note that horse racing is two words and that Triple Crown is capitalized. The Triple Crown consists of the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes.

The Kentucky Derby is also called the Run for the Roses. It's capitalized just so.

The NBA finals are right around the corner. Note that AP’s style on NBA finals is to lowercase the f. I’m not a fan of this rule, but that’s what AP uses. Championship in NBA championship is lowercase as well.

You may use NBA or National Basketball Association on first reference. If you spell it out, use NBA on second reference.

*****

Watch your a’s and an’s in conjunction with NBA. It should be “an NBA team” – NBA is pronounced en-bee-ay, so you need the an in front of it.

Here’s a guide to see common basketball terms:

- 3-pointer (there’s no need to spell it out)

- backboard

- fast break

- free throw

- halftime

- jump shot

- layup

- offseason

- playoff
