The staff at the Daily Siftings Herald in Arkadelphia, Ark., was all over a breaking news story over the weekend. The result? A nice boost in page veiws.
WHAT THEY DID: From editor Wendy Ledbetter: "We had a murder over the weekend - Sunday morning in the early hours. I heard about it and had reporters on the scene from about 10 and we started posting updates to our website. We posted about eight or ten updates over the course of the day, doling out information as we got it and teasing to more to come. We got a few photos up over the course of the day as well. We posted to Facebook and I saw it shared with a bunch of folks. We normally have 2-300 hundred visitors to our site on weekends. We had more than 7,400 hits Sunday."
THE TAKEAWAY: Following breaking news closely and updating your website with new information as it comes in will get you page views on your website and engagement on social media, both good things.
