The Register-Mail in Galesburg, Ill., substitutes a DSLR camera for an iPhone to document homecoming events of a local high school.
WHAT THEY DID: Photo editor Jake May uses an iPhone 4S with the Hipstamatic application to provide visual coverage of Galesburg High School’s homecoming events that include a PowderPuff game, prep rally, parade and varsity football game. Fifteen of the photos are uploaded to an online gallery and five are published as a photo page in the print edition.
“The idea was to show our community that many of them carry a powerful tool, and give them a look at how to use it,” May said. “With the amount of technology we carry in a compact device in our pockets, we wanted to shed light on its capabilities.”
THE TAKEAWAY: The Register-Mail turns to technology to provide an exciting and engaging news experience. It also offers readers the opportunity to take part in the coverage of their community.
