When you have fun on Facebook, your fans will too. That leads to good engagement.

WHAT THEY DID: Nicole Simmons, regional digital editor for GateHouse Media New England, manages the Facebook and Twitter accounts for WickedLocal.com, the regional portal page for GHMNE. She has a fun, sometimes irreverent but always professional voice on social media, and interacts with the fans on Facebook. When fans responded to a quirky story she posted about a man who attacked someone using a sausage, she followed up by posting a silly YouTube video about - yep,  you guessed it - a sausage attack.

THE TAKEAWAY: Don't be afraid to have fun on Facebook and Twitter. Always be professional, but you can show your lighter side at times. Your fans and followers will respond.
