Best of the Day: Thinking platform appropriately when it comes to graduation (6/14/12)

Ken Johnson, online editor for the Patriot Ledger in Quincy, Mass., pulled together a great slideshow covering each of the 53 graduations covered by the daily and weekly GateHouse news staffs in the region. He used that to promo the print and e-editions of the paper.

WHAT HE DID: The slideshow has been running for three weeks in the carousel, growing all the time as graduation ceremonies where added. In the story he attached the slideshow to, he provided links to the e-edition and to subscribe to the newspaper where readers could find names of all the graduates of all the local high schools and colleges covered.

THE TAKEAWAY: This is classic platform-appropriate publishing. The slideshow is beautiful and moving, and can (obvoiusly) work online. Long lists of names online are boring, and can't be cut out and put on a fridge or in a scrapbook. They belong in the paper.
