50 YEARS AGO: "The Redwood Falls High School class of 1962 graduated with 89 members — the same number they started kindergarten with in 1950, although the number varied from 56 to 99 over the years."

WHAT THEY DID: Staff writer Joshua Dixon combs through the archived editions of the Redwood Falls Gazette for interesting facts involving the people and places of Redwood Falls, Minn. The feature is called Backward Glances and is published every week in the paper and on the website.

THE TAKEAWAY: Historical content that is specific to a community is invaluable. It allows readers to go back in time and truly remember when … . The success of this feature is that the content is hyper local. Coupled with a photo, it is the type of information that readers will consume. To make it even more engaging, find people who may have been involved in the event and get a quote, a then-and-now photo sequence or a video segment. The interview may even morph into a centerpiece.
