The Repository of Canton, Ohio, preps the community with everything it needs to know about the city’s inaugural marathon.

WHAT THEY DID: The Repository offers a visual preview to inform its readers of a three-day event culminating in the June 17 marathon. From a video of the entire 26.2-mile course in only six minutes to elevation maps in pdf. format, readers and competitors have a visual take of what they need to know.

There also is an aggregate site for archived stories on the event and a daily profile box highlighting one of the marathon runners.

THE TAKEAWAY: Use a different approach to previewing new or annual events in your community. Instead of an 18-inch story, engage readers through video, photo galleries, quick hits and other visuals. Offer readers something they need and can use to enhance their experience at the local level.
