The staff at the La Junta Tribune-Democrat in Colorado has started using Twitter as yet another platform to reach out to readers.

WHAT THEY DID: The staff’s tweets are a great mix of everything the paper does – sports, news, features and breaking news updates. Last week, during a big storm that dropped golfball-sized hail, the Tribune-Democrat provided live updates via Twitter. The tweets included links to videos, and callouts for reader-submitted photos.

THE TAKEAWAY: Using Twitter for a variety of reasons will help build an audience, so when breaking news hits, you’ve already got a base of followers. Using Twitter for callouts can be a great way to get reader-submitted photos or information.
