The Utica Observer-Dispatch covered the annual Boilermaker Run with every multimedia tool they had, and it paid off.

WHAT THEY DID: The annual Boilermaker Run in Utica, NY is a huge, big deal for the community. People from all over the country - and the world - compete, and nearly everyone in town turns out to watch, if not run. Knowing what a huge event this is, the O-D staff planned ahead, and made sure they used all the tools in their toolkit to capture every angle.

 - There's an interactive course map.

- There are photo galleries.

- There are videos.

- There's a blog.

- There's a Twitter feed.

- There's a microsite pulling it all together.

All of this planning and work paid off in pageviews - hundreds of thousands of pageviews.

THE TAKEAWAY: When you have an event coming up that looms large for your community, it's worth the time and effort spent in planning and executing a multimedia coverage plan.
