JoAnne Miller of the Hillsdale County Historical Society talks about the Hillsdale County Poor House that dates back to 1825 in this video shot by The Daily Reporter.

The Daily Reporter in Coldwater, Mich., takes a digital approach to ASF. Every week the staff shoots a video under the headline: Five things you didn’t know about …”

WHAT THEY DID: The Daily Reporter picks a timely or relevant topic and localizes it by asking a member or members of the community to share their insight. The topic may be historical in nature, such as dealing with a landmark, and is discussed by an expert. Sometimes the topic is light-hearted and is addressed accordingly. Either way, the videos are informative, entertaining and presented in ASF.

THE TAKEAWAY: Alternative story formats do not always have to be written. Video is a great way to inform the community by involving the community. The concept could be used for community partner journalism or public service journalism projects as well. And it doesn’t always have to be video. A slideshow of photographs has possibilities. Regardless, the "Five Things" format is a great way to add to the video archive.
