The Repository in Canton, Ohio, gets up close and personal with members of its community.
WHAT THEY DID: Melissa Griffy Seeton, Your Life editor of The Repository, started a series title "A Day In The Life" about a year ago. "This feature," says managing editor Donald Detore, "is hinged strongly on reader submissions." The staff uses callouts to find different personalities and relies on reader-submitted photos. The interview is based on five questions, and the most recent Q&A focused on a teacher at Minerva High School in Ohio whose husband died from brain cancer and is raising a daughter on her own. The series opens the door for readers to have a better understanding of someone in their community.
The questions include: What’s your typical day like? What do you find challenging? What is the best thing about your day? What’s one thing people would never guess about you? What would you change if given the chance?
THE TAKEAWAY: The Q&A is an excellent way to add the human element to print and Web platforms without taking a lot of time. The ASF approach allows readers to meet, know, understand and even relate to the subject. It also offers an opportunity to add a community partner journalism piece to your publication. The Repository also has created a microsite for the series.
