Despite small signs of the economy and housing market strengthening, a recent report from real estate website Zillow indicates about one in three U.S. mortgage holders are underwater.

On its website, Zillow offers a map where you can search for negative equity by zip code, city or county – good for localization.

Local real estate agents would be other good sources, to comment on the local real estate market and where they see things going. A Q&A with a mortgage lender on what underwater homeowners can do would be a good compliment as a sidebar.

The Federal Housing Finance Agency, now the regulator of Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac, offers an online house price calculator, as well as other information that could make for some good breakouts.
