A national yoga organization is pushing the posture-improving activity to become a sport in the Olympics.

From Time: "USA Yoga is seeking to become the national governing body of yoga asana, and has applied to the United States Olympic committee to be officially registered. The organization hopes to form an international yoga federation and to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games."

And from Philadelphia Magazine: "USA Yoga founder Rajashree Choudhury says yoga competitions, which are common in India, focus on the physical and athletic aspects of yoga rather than the meditative. But does turning yoga—usually thought of as a personal practice—into a competition, well, sort of defeat the purpose"

Some ideas:

  • Talk with local yoga teachers and students. Do they see yoga as a sport? Should it be part of the Olympics? Do their classes get competitive?
  • Talk with gymnasts, track and field athletes and other participants in more traditional Olympic sports. What do they think about yoga being a sports?
  • Be sure to publish a poll asking readers what they think.
