Kirksville Daily Express Managing Editor Jason Hunsicker was awarded first place for column writing from the 2012 Heart of America Awards June 9 in Kansas City.
The awards are sponsored by the Kansas City Press Club’s chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and include newspapers in western Missouri and eastern Kansas. Hunsicker won the Gold Award for news columns in the 50,000 circulations and under division.
Three columns were submitted as part of Hunsicker’s entry (“Tract 9510 - Symbol of poverty is actually a thriving college campus, but are there truths within the text”; “R-III district should begin drug tests”; “Prop B debate brings big concerns”). His overall body of work was judged.
The awards were presented during a banquet at The Muehlebach Hotel in downtown Kansas City. Hunsicker’s “My Take” columns appear in the Daily Express’ weekend editions.
