The newsroom staff of the Nebraska City News-Press and Syracuse Journal-Democrat garnered several awards Saturday at the Nebraska Press Association banquet.

The News-Press website, www.ncnewspress.com was first in its class, with judges calling the site “well-designed” and “user friendly.” They complimented the “ease of navigation,” saying, “Whatever readers or advertisers are searching for on this site should be findable. Job well done!”

Online videos from both ncnewspress.com and journaldemocrat.com combined to sweep the video awards for Class C of the competition.

Dan Swanson’s spot-news video of a fatal crash involving a tractor trailer and tanker near Dunbar on April 1 earned a first place award.

Swanson was able to get in position to observe as Dunbar, Syracuse and Nebraska City firefighters approached the burning semi-trailer.

Judges from the Alabama Press Association credited Swanson for setting the scene and using still photographs.

Kirt Manion earned a second place award for a high school football video published on the Syracuse Journal-Democrat website.

Swanson received a third place award for a video this fall regarding flood damage near the Highway 2 interchange with Interstate 29.

The Syracuse Journal-Democrat received a second place  for use of computer graphics produced in house. The winning entry, “Impact of Autumn” was created by Kirt Manion.

Kirt Manion was also recognized in the sport writing category for a story, “City Jumpers Snare State Titles,” published in the News-Press, as well as receiving a third place honor for sports column in the News-Press.

Dan Swanson’s story, “Deputies Report Horrid Scene,” earned the Journal-Democrat a third place in the breaking news category.

A photo page of the homecoming of a National Guard unit took third place. The entry was published in the News-Press and featured photographs by T.J. Chrastil.
