The Patriot Ledger was recognized with two national awards at the Society of American Business Editors and Writers’ annual conference in Indianapolis last weekend.

The Ledger was the only daily paper with a circulation of under 100,000 to receive SABEW’s General Excellence award, which recognizes the best business sections in the country. The award was based on sections that were published in 2011. The SABEW judges cited the quantity of staff-written articles, the variety of subject matter, and the visually attractive presentation of the stories.

This is the third time that the Ledger’s business section has received SABEW’s General Excellence award. The Ledger also won the award last year and three years ago.

Business editor Jon Chesto’s Mass. Market blog <http://blogs.wickedlocal.com/massmarkets/#axzz1pZkhBca9>  was also recognized as the best business blog for a daily newspaper with a circulation of under 100,000. This is the second year in a row that the Mass. Market blog has received the award.

The business staff at the Ledger consists of Chesto, reporter Steve Adams and an intern reporter. Stories written by general assignment reporters sometimes appear as well.

Overall, there were more than 200 winners across 89 categories in the SABEW contest. There was a record-setting 1,030 entries this year, an increase of 14 percent over the previous year.
