Kymberli Hagelberg, a reporter and writer with experience in newspapers, radio and online news, will join The Suburbanite as editor starting Nov. 9.
She succeeds Tamara Proctor, 52, who is leaving The Suburbanite — and Ohio — after 12 years at the weekly newspaper company.
Hagelberg, a life-long Ohio resident, currently is editor of the Patch.com web site serving Fairlawn and Bath. She has reported news for Patch.com, created and edited video, and led a group of freelance writers and videographers.
Earlier, Hagelberg worked as a radio reporter and producer for WCPN, the public radio station in Cleveland. She was the station’s main political reporter during the 2008 presidential campaign.
She worked for nearly eight years as a reporter at the Akron Beacon Journal, where she covered crime, courts and general assignments, including coverage of Stark County.
She also has worked at Cleveland Scene and is the author of a book, “Wicked Akron,” about the history of crime in Summit County.
Hagelberg, 54, will be editor of The Suburbanite, serving Green, Springfield, Coventry and Hartville, among other communities in southern Summit and northern Stark counties. She also will be editor of The Jackson Suburbanite serving Stark’s Jackson Township.
“I come from a small town, so I know the importance of a community newspaper,” Hagelberg said. “I’m excited to be joining The Suburbanite in that tradition, and to continue to grow in the future with its dedicated staff.”
Jeff Gauger, executive editor of GateHouse Ohio Newspapers, which owns The Suburbanite, said Hagelberg will bring experience in the traditional craft of news reporting along with skills in the newer crafts of publishing news and multimedia online.
“We’re pleased that she has decided to join our team,” he said.
