Joe Shaheen is the new editor of The Independent starting this week.

Shaheen has worked at the newspaper since 1989 and has been its managing editor for the past four years.

He succeeds Robert McCune, who has moved on to an editing job serving all GateHouse Media newspapers in Ohio.

“I knew Joe back when we were much younger and on staff together in the late ’80’s,” said Independent Publisher Ron Frailly.

“He understands our market and newspaper operations. His past experience has positioned him well to take over the reigns of our editorial department.”

Shaheen said The Independent has earned reputation as a first-rate community newspaper.

“I hope to build on that tradition as editor,” he said. “The Inde has been my professional home for more than two decades, and I feel honored to be entrusted with this job.”

Shaheen, 54, is a graduate of Bowling Green State University.

After college, he worked briefly at the Alliance Review, then landed in radio news until 1982. He worked in radio in several communities, including Akron and Canton.

He next took a staff job at the Stark County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities.
While at the agency, Shaheen began writing stories for The Independent. That led, in 1989, to his joining the newspaper full-time as a sportswriter.

He was promoted to sports editor in 1993 and served in that role until becoming managing editor in 2006.

Shaheen and his wife live in Canton Township. They have one adult son.

McCune joined The Independent in 2005 as managing editor and was promoted two months later to editor. In his new role, he’ll oversee design of The Independent and its two sister papers in Ohio, The (Canton) Repository and The (Dover-New Philadelphia) Times-Reporter.
