Dan Goldman from the Brighton-Pittsford Post (N.Y) has been named Sports Writer of the Year in the 2009 Best of GateHouse contest.
About his entry
Dan Goldman’s entry covered a variety of topics and approaches, including the Buffalo Bills’ training camp, a determined lumberjack and a hockey player whose career had come full circle. In his coverage of the Bills’ camp, held at a local college, Goldman found out how the pro athletes felt about the change of pace — sleeping in dorms, adhering to a curfew and interacting with the locals. “The Determined Lumberjack” was a lively story about a woodsman getting back into the swing of competition after receiving a kidney transplant from his father. In “Story Skates Full Circle,” Goldman wove narratives of past and present in an effective tale of a hockey player who returned as a young adult to play on the ice where, as a 5-year-old, he dropped the puck as a cancer survivor.
Judges’ comments
