The Daily Telegram (Mich.) has been awarded Special Section: Niche Product of the Year for Lenawee Magazine in the 2009 Best of GateHouse contest.

About the entry

This quarterly magazine offers readers a variety of topics, organized by department and united by a clean, consistent design. Self-described as “a magazine about the good life in southeast Michigan,” this section includes stories and features that all have a local flavor: suggestions of local musicians to discover and a guide to fruit trees that will thrive in the region. The magazine also makes use of area writers: A local bookstore manager suggests books for holiday gift-giving, and a hospitality instructor from an area technical school offers seasonal recipes. Finally, Lenawee provides additional utility via an arts calendar and a clearly labeled advertising gift-guide section.

Judges’ comments

Judges appreciated The Daily Telegram’s editorial transparency and even-handed sourcing with this magazine, in which news and advertising were clearly defined. “I could see that the editors were striving to apply journalistic standards to a magazine format. It provides a rounded mix of features stories, quick hits and alternative story forms. The story choices strongly reflected the local community without becoming boosterish.”
