The Repository (Ohio) has been awarded Special Section: Niche Product of the Year for the Pro Football Hall of Fame section in the 2009 Best of GateHouse contest.
About the entry
The Repository entered a collection of special sections to coordinate with the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame inductions. The first section sets up the coming week of activities, appealing to local readers as well as visitors with its practical information. A pocket guide helps provide on-the-go information. The second section recaps the greatest Hall of Famers of all time, ranking the newspaper’s choice for the top 50. In addition to making good use of the staff’s expertise, the ranking makes for good discussion for readers. The third element encompasses a six-page section dedicated to each inductee in the class of 2009. As induction weekend approaches, Canton revolves around the festivities – it is defined by this signature event. These special sections fill the needs of three audiences: hometown readers, committed fans and out-of-town residents.
Judges’ comments
“I was prepared to say, ‘OK you guys have gone way overboard here,’ but knowing what you needed to do for this event, I ended up admiring it greatly. The sections had consistency in design and format, strong writing and lots of information. Too much? Well, probably not for the Canton market and committed fans, which was your niche.”
