Kevin Frisch from the Daily Messenger (N.Y.) has been named Editorial Writer of the Year for Division B in the 2009 Best of GateHouse contest.
About the entry
Kevin Frisch, now a three-time champion in this category, provides a strong local editorial voice. Frisch took on local officials who passed a new town policy that all but killed the free flow of public information: “What we have here is a control-crazed board majority run amok. The new measure runs counter to every fiber of open government.” The editorial also correctly explained that the new policy was, in effect, a response to the newspaper’s request for information. In an editorial about veterans opposing proposed development for the local VA Medical Center, the newspaper said opponents who don’t want any new development used for non-veteran activities are “fighting the wrong battle.” In a call to action, Frisch and the newspaper responded to a fatal traffic accident by thanking the town for recognizing the risk and urging officials to install more paths and sidewalks in a rapidly developing residential area.
Judges’ comments
Judges praised Frisch and the Daily Messenger for taking on local officials and calling residents to action. “The editorials were hard-hitting and clearly written.”
