Bob Kast from The Repository (Ohio) has been named Designer of the Year for Division A in the 2009 Best of GateHouse contest.
About the entry
The “Red or Green” front-page infographic is a clean and informative look at electronic surveillance cameras. The graphic provides a step-by-step look at how red-light detection systems work – a concern of all residents who might be affected by the new technology. Kast’s illustration on the Sunday business page was a well-executed and engaging way to illustrate rising electric power rates. Bold type leads the reader into the illustration of a giant light bulb emerging from a power company. The image, paired with textual elements, helped readers immediately realize the significance of the rate change. The third entry, a poster-like sports page, lets the image speak for itself. To preview the 2009-10 high school basketball season, the focus is on two especially tall Jackson Township players. Appropriately, they appear larger than life in Kast’s illustration.
Judges’ comments
“Bob is a solid graphics reporter, page designer and information architect. His pages show extreme attention to detail, great use of images, information layering and a strong sense of typographic rhythm. Bob shows a well-roundedness that is very much appreciated by these judges.”
