Krista Babbitt from The Holland Sentinel (Mich.) has been named Designer of the Year for Division B in the 2009 Best of GateHouse contest.

About the entry

To illustrate the effect of a casino project – or lack thereof – on local tourism, Babbitt put together a centerpiece illustration for a story that didn’t necessarily lend itself to photos. She made the most of her design skills in giving visual representation to multiple elements within the story.  In a creative front-page centerpiece about the pros and cons associated with Facebook, Babbitt used the social networking site’s visual framework and complemented it with text that followed the theme. The package is filled with quick-read elements that serve scanning readers well. Babbitt helps bring the $787 billion federal stimulus bill into perspective with a front-page centerpiece. There are several layers of information to explain just how much $787 billion is. And the local angle is not ignored, with a story detailing which local projects are looking for stimulus dollars.

Judges’ comments

“Her ability to develop conceptual approaches to visual storytelling is outstanding. She clearly understands the power that a strong visual concept can have when combined with stories that don’t immediately present opportunities for documentary photojournalism. It’s also important to note that the concepts she developed weren’t easy designs to execute.”
