Steven Jack from Suburban Life Publications (Ill.) has been named Designer of the Year for Division C in the 2009 Best of GateHouse contest.

About the entry

In a news spread previewing the inauguration of President Barack Obama, Jack exhibited a clear attention to detail in presentation of the text. In the information-heavy pages, his use of type gives cues to the reader, adheres to the typographic hierarchy and advances storytelling. A preview of a high school state championship football game again uses type as an artistic element. Two action-packed images are balanced with and complemented by type that matched the tone of the story. Breakouts serve scanning readers. The excitement of an independent wrestling circuit is reflected with bold type and active photos. From headline to subhead to the introductory paragraph, the type leads the reader into the text of the story.
