Tom Loewy from The Register-Mail (Ill.) has been named Columnist of the Year for Division B in the 2009 Best of GateHouse contest.
About the entry
Tom Loewy tackles the latest issues in the news while telling the stories of the everyday people affected by them. Loewy told us how Jimmy Haynes left his house to buy a truck but purchased a motorcycle on impulse. Haynes’ first ride was his last, and the young man shared the memories of the best days of his life and his dreams from his wheelchair. Another column profiled a former drug addict who evaded the police while pregnant but turned herself in. Loewy painted the woman with compassion as she revealed her fears, regrets and hopes. When a town hall meeting on health care overhaul was held locally, Loewy captured the voices of those who were failed by the system, and those who feared the implementation of socialized medicine.
Judges’ comments
Loewy showcases his skills as an interviewer as he shares with readers compelling tales of ordinary people, judges said. “With sensitivity, respect and understanding, Mr. Loewy communicates the difficult circumstances people endure, the obstacles they overcome and the challenges they still face.”
