Oak Ridger takes variety of awards home from Tennessee press group
The Oak Ridger (a GateHouse newspaper in Tennessee) won a first-place award for headline writing, a third-place for Best News Photo and several other awards at Friday's University of Tennessee-Tennessee Press Association meeting.
Contest awards were given in five categories based upon circulation. The Kentucky Press Association judged a total of 1,477 contest entries submitted by 84 Tennessee newsapers. The entries covered the calendar year 2008.
Darrell G. Richardson, The Oak Ridger's editor and publisher, accepted the awards for the newspaper at the TPA event in Chattanooga.
In addition to the first-place award for headline writing, the newspaper won a third-place award for Best News Photo for a photo taken by Staff Photographer Scott Fraker of witnesses to a tragedy at Melton Hill Lake in which a woman drove into the lake.
Other awards included fourth-place awards for Best Personal Humor Column and Community Lifestyles and a fifth-place award for makeup and appearance.
UT has co-sponsored the annual contest since 1940.
