Make a Google Map of July Fourth events in your region
July Fourth is approaching, and you can help your online readers by putting together a quick Google Map plotting all the fireworks and parades in your region.
You can embed the map in any advance coverage you publish and also publish it as a standalone story with a headline like: FOURTH OF JULY MAP: A guide to fireworks and events in our region.
- Rank the story on your homepage and publish to any other appropriate sections, such as Entertainment.
- Be sure to include an e-mail address, and ask readers about any other events you may have missed.
- Also, take the opprortunity to ask readers to send you any photos they take on the Fourth so you can build a gallery of reader submissions.
- Finally run a promotion in print referring readers to the map online.
This map is basic. There are other free online services, such as Umapper.com, that offer more bells and whistles, but this Screencast on Google Maps will get you started.
Once you have created a map, the Screencast link below will show you how to embed code in a story. The Screencast shows how to embed html for a video, but it is the same process for Google's map code.
