  • GateHouse Media's soon-to-launch Center for News & Design in Austin, Texas, will be hiring dozens of journalists in the coming weeks and months, with more than 150 employees expected to be working there by mid-2015. Many candidates for those positions will be early career journalists trying to navigate an ever-evolving job market.
Mark Colosimo, general manager of GateHouse's new center, joined other media leaders Tuesday at the University of Texas for a panel discussion aimed at providing guidance to these job-seekers. The discussion, titled "Nontraditional Journalism Jobs," is taking place in conjunction with the UT Moody College of Communication's spring career fair, in which GateHouse is also a participant the following day.
Panelists discussed the technology, innovation and skill issues facing journalism students as they enter the workforce — with a special focus on how their degrees can be applied in new ways and the growing number of opportunities outside traditional newsrooms.
GateHouse Media's new center is part of a long-term effort to offer a range of content services to the company's publications and market those services to other media entities. The plan incorporates both print and digital components, in addition to new platforms in development.
Colosimo was joined on the panel by UT professor Robert Quigley, Shannon Colletti of Community Impact Newspapers and Patrick Salazar of Rooster Teeth Productions.
